REPORT OF PRACTICE

Installing Lotus SmartSuite 97

Introduction

Lotus SmartSuite is one of the most popular application software in the world. The software which is included Lotus 123 , word processing etc. are very useful . That is why we choose to install it as our practical exercise after we finished to install the operating system software.

Lotus SmartSuite System Requirement

An IBM PC or compatible(486 or higher)
A mouse or pointing device
VGA or higher video
A mouse or other pointing device
One 1.44MB 3.5" disk driver or one CD-ROM driver
Must have Windows 95 O/S and CD-ROM
57MB minimum hard disk space(lotus recommend 140MB hard disk to install all function
8Mb RAM (12 MB recommend)

Computer System in Lab

80486DX2
16 MB RAM
Total 242MB hard disk
121MB free on "D" drive , 24 MB free on disk "C"
CD-ROM
1.44MB floppy
Display type VGA
Running Windows 95 Operating System

Install Procedure

Because the computer that we use only has 121 MB hard disk space in "D" drive ("C" drive even worse only has 24 MB hard disk space), so we can't install full function to the computer. In case of that, we had to chose the minimum feature. The procedure is as below:

Turn on computer in Windows95 environment
Place Smartsuite CD into CD-ROM
Goto "Run" in Windows95, type "e:\install"
Select internet and English
Enter Name as group name , company name as "SIT"
Select driver directory as "d:\lotus "
Select lotus Smartsuite Application under lotus
Select minimum feature
Select program folder as "lotus Smartsuite "
Then computer automatically copy files to "D" drive until it finish
Test the program try to find the problems
Install complete

Trouble Shooting

After sucessful installation, we wanted to put it back to original. Unforturnlaly , we did not use uninstall function in SmartSuite instead of directly go to DOS use deltree command to delete the program . When we restarted the computer, a error message was showing : can not find "smartctr.exe and suitest.exe " files .

As we know that both files are registered files , so we had looked at registered files and deleted those files from registered files. However when we restarted the computer again, the message was still on , we use "search" function but could not find it, which means the files have already deleted but the name of the files was still in the registered files list. So we realized that deltree command can not instead of uninstall function which can delete all files including registered files. At the end, we had to install SmartSuite again and used uninstall function to uninstall SmartSuite, then problem was solved.

Conclution

From this practice we learned that: if one software has the uninstall function , we should use it when we want to uninstall the software. Deltree command has its limitation in this way.
